Attraction Switches – Are Women More Selective Than Men?

Just finished reading an interesting article over at PsychCentral called “Are Women Really More Selective In Dating?” and wanted to make a few comments on it. The article was about a study done in the speed dating world where it was determined that women tend to be more selective than the men ONLY when they remain seated the whole time while the men rotate around them. When this was reversed and the women were asked to rotate positions, the men then became more selective.

I found this study very interesting because it alludes to the many different ways attraction can be flipped on behind the scenes (aka: outside of our conscious awareness). Studies have shown that there are many things that influence how attractive we find a person that goes beyond their physical appearance or personality. Have you ever been attracted to someone who just wasn’t your type and you just couldn’t make sense of it? Chances are, something outside of your conscious awareness was influencing your feelings at the time.

Here are a few examples of how a person’s perceived attractiveness can be influenced by subtle factors:

1. We will usually perceive someone as being more attractive if they are found in the company of attractive people of the opposite sex.

2. We are more likely to date someone who is below our “normal” standards if our self-esteem has recently been injured in some way.

3. Women will prefer different facial features in men depending on where they are in their monthly cycles (i.e., at certain times, they will be more attracted to men with feminine features than those who have more masculine features).
